MDF vs HDF Cabinet Doors: A Kitchen Designer’s Guide

MDF vs HDF Cabinet Doors: A Kitchen Designer’s Guide

In the kitchen and bath industry, there can be confusion around the quality of fiberboard. This post will compare Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF and High Density Fiberboard (HDF) so designers can recommend the right products and clients can understand the value they are getting.

What’s the difference between MDF and HDF?

MDF and HDF are both made from wood fibres pressed together with resin under heat, but HDF uses a higher density. This is what makes HDF more durable and resistant to moisture than MDF. Honestly, they are pretty similar products, but HDF is higher quality because of the increased density. However, the density also makes HDF heavier and more expensive than MDF so there are some instances where MDF is preferred because of weight or price.

Why does density matter when comparing MDF and HDF?

Higher density means less movement. HDF doesn’t expand or contract with heat the way MDF can, and it holds up better against moisture, which matters in kitchens and bathrooms where humidity and temperature swings are part of daily use.

For designers, a denser material is a more stable material, and a more stable material is a better base for a painted finish that’s expected to last, which is what clients ultimately want. Long lasting value for their investment.

Why is HDF better for painted cabinets?

Decor builds custom painted cabinet doors from HDF specifically because of how it performs under paint.

  1. HDF has no grain, there’s nothing to telegraph through a painted surface.
  2. Some of Decor’s HDF doors are built from a single piece of material rather than assembled from separate rails, stiles, and a centre panel, there are no joints to have hairline cracks.
  3. The surface is very smooth and creates a near-perfect finish.
  4. HDF is higher density than MDF so it resists moisture and expansion.

Comparing MDF and HDF to Design Clients

If a client is comparing quotes between design centers and sees “MDF” on one and “HDF” on another, the client may not understand the quality difference and why the price might vary between quotes. There are a few ways you can increase clarity and steer clients towards purchasing your product.

  1. Communicate the material difference between MDF and HDF. (Durability, moisture resistance, weight, price).
  2. Make sure clients understand the construction of the door, if it is 1-piece or 5-piece.
  3. Compare what the design process and level of service is at other businesses and communicate what benefits your showroom offers at your price point.

When selling cabinets, communicating value is important to help the client understand everything they are receiving with their quote. Whether you sell HDF or MDF doors at your showroom, being able to communicate what you offer and how it benefits the client will get you further than simply saying one is better than the other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MDF a bad material for cabinet doors? No. MDF is a reasonable, widely used material for painted doors. HDF is simply a step up in density. Both MDF and HDF outperform painted solid (natural) wood doors.

Does HDF cost more than MDF? Generally, yes, since it’s a denser and more heavily processed material, HDF costs more.

How does High Density Fiberboard compare to particleboard? Particleboard is made from wood particles and chips of varying sizes, pressed together with resin. HDF is made from finer wood fibres compressed at much higher pressure and density. Particleboard is used for cabinet boxes, where MDF and HDF are used for cabinet doors.

Are HDF cabinets on trend right now? Yes, we identified painted cabinets as one trend in our 2026 kitchen cabinet trends report.
